Alphonse Halimi 118 lbs beat Freddie Gilroy 116 lbs by PTS in round 15 of 15

  • Date: 1960-10-25
  • Location: Empire Pool, Wembley, London, United Kingdom
  • Referee: Philippe De Backer

"Alphonse Halimi, the newly crowned bantamweight champion of half the world, said today he's out to make himself the undisputed champion of the whole world. Halimi won the European version of the world title by grabbing a controversial 15-round decision over British and European champion Freddie Gilroy Tuesday night. Belgian referee Philippe de Backer gave Halimi, the 28-year old French-Algerian, the verdict over Gilroy, despite the views of most ringside observers that the 24-year old Irishman had done enough to win. Halimi scored the only real knockdown of the fight. In the 13th round he landed a short right hook that floored Gilroy. The count reached four, before the bell rang." -Associated Press

  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 7-5-3 Gilroy
  • With bantamweight champ Jose Becerra's retirement, the 118 lb. title was split with Halimi winning the European version and Eder Jofre winning the vacant NBA version against Eloy Sanchez on November 18, 1960 in Los Angeles.
