"Unbeaten Johnny Caldwell of Northern Ireland, opened a severe cut over Alphonse Halimi's left eye in the 8th round and won the European version of the world bantamweight title on a 15 round decision last night. A crowd of about 11,000 watched in Wembley Indoor Stadium as Caldwell took command of the fight after the cut was opened over Halimi's eye during an exchange early in the 8th. The Frenchman's eye bled heavily the rest of the fight. Caldwell ran into trouble in the 14th round. The Frenchman, apparently sensing he needed a knockout to win, came charging out. However, in the 15th, Caldwell slipped in a right cross that sent Halimi slumping to the canvas. He scrambled up at five, but the referee made him take the compulsory eight-count, Caldwell continued to bore in but was unable to finish the Frenchman." -Associated Press
