In the April 6 1938 Lowell Sun, Henry Armstrong was quoted as follows: "Alton Black, of Reno. Nv., was the hardest customer I?ve ever come across. He hit me the hardest blows of my career. No matter where his punch landed - on my shoulder, body or elbow - it always carried a terrific sting. I finally did knock him out in the eighth. He didn't get any place because he had what is called 'paper skin.' He cut easily and a lot of his bouts were stopped because of that reason."
