Oakland Trib said he died on eve of his 19th birthday. Same report stated that he held the Oriental welterweight Title. Was said to be supporting 7 brothers and sisters in Harbin, China, which at the time was under control of Russia. Shelaeff's father was a Russian priest in Harbin.

Reportedly had a career of 28 bouts, four of them in the United States. Came to San Francisco from Russia four months before he died. After he lost the decision, he left the ring unassisted. He collapsed in his dressing room, complaining of abdominal pain. Dr. John G. Sullivan said he had suffered a brain concussion, for which an operation was performed.

A Coroner's Jury exonerated Salvadore of any wrongdoing.

In February 1939, the AP reported that Paul Shelaeff sued the doctors and the CA State Athletic Commission for $100,000. Shelaeff was described as a Russian priest living in Manchuria. A coroner's inquest had shown that the fighter was suffering from lobar pnemonia when he entered the ring.
