Oakland Trib said he died on eve of his 19th birthday. Same report stated that he held the Oriental welterweight Title. Was said to be supporting 7 brothers and sisters in Harbin, China, which at the time was under control of Russia. Shelaeff's father was a Russian priest in Harbin.

Reportedly had a career of 28 bouts, four of them in the United States. Came to San Francisco from Russia four months before he died. After he lost the decision, he left the ring unassisted.
