Angel Espada 144 lbs beat Jack Tillman 147 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Welterweight Angel Espada, 144 1/2, of Puerto Rico, outclassed Jack Tillman, 146 1/2, of Mobile, Ala., at the Civic Center. Tillman was the crowd's favorite, having won four fights in a row at the same arena. Tillman couldn't or wouldn't trade punches with the aggressive islander, and made a bad showing. The crowd waited patiently for Tillman to get going, but for this night it just wasn't in the cards. The fans gave Espada a big hand at the finish. The decision was unanimous for Espada." -Ring magazine, September 1973 issue

  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 50-43 Espada

Post fight comments

  • "I was dead, but I can't explain why. I can't use the excuse I fooled around, because I didn't. I could tell by the 2nd round that I had nothing." -Jack Tillman
  • "That was the first time I've seen Tillman and I was impressed. He didn't have a punch, but he moves and slides, and is hard to hit. A lesser man would have got stiffened. It took four rounds to figure him out. Tillman has good moves, but my guy took them away." -Angelo Dundee, Espada's co-manager
