  • Date: 1975-10-11
  • Location: Estadio Francisco Montaner, Ponce, Puerto Rico
  • Referee: Waldemar Schmidt
  • Judge: 145-142

"Angel Espada of Puerto Rico retained his WBA welterweight crown with a unanimous decision over challenger Johnny Gant of Washington, D.C. The fight started slowly in the 1st round, but Espada, using combinations, took an early lead and seemed to confuse Gant until the middle rounds. Gant then began using his reach advantage, sticking his left hand more often in the champion's face and occasionally connecting with a hard right. Gant, however, could not withstand the continuous body blows and the eye cuts through most of the fight. Espada had opened a cut over Gant's left eye in the 5th and the American challenger's cut became more serious when a series of Espada punches opened it wider in the 10th, 11th and again in the 14th." -Associated Press

  • All three Puerto Rican officials had Espada the winner by scores of 145-142, 149-139 and 147-140
  • Johnny Gant was a substitute for Massachusetts' Tony Petronelli
