Although never a professional boxer, Captain Anketell Moutray Read represented the Northamptonshire Regiment as an amateur up to and including the Army and Navy Championships. He was one of at least nine boxers who received the Victoria Cross--Great Britain's highest award for gallantry--during World War I.
