A graduate of the University of Michigan, the Missouri School of Mines and Wesleyan University, a newspaperman, and manager and/or trainer of such well-known boxers as Jess Willard, Dick Hyland, Battling Nelson and Willie Ritchie, Young Jeffries, born Anton d'Joinville circa 1875, started his own boxing career in 1904 at 123 pounds and had some 57 bouts by early 1915, reportedly having never been knocked out. He became the Southern Middleweight Champion for a number of years.
By 1915 he had lost his hearing and ability to speak but continued to fight.
