Biography
Antônio Bernardo Soares, Born in the city of Itú – São Paulo, in the 1940s, Bernardo, 10 years old, was already inclined to boxing. His progenitor Antônio Soares, a practitioner of the noble art, realized thet his son was well-off had no doubts.
He set up a small gym in the backyard of his house to feel Bernardo’s satisfaction.
And with other boys from his street, between training and gymnastics, he shaped future boxers. Later, Bernardo entered the academy Wilson Russo, next to the Church of the Consolação in São Paulo and to his surprise, hem et the first South American Champion, Pedro Galasso.
And with his teaching, he learned a lot.
Then, keeping in touch with his great friend Benjamin Rutta, a coach at Guarani Academy, at Street Ginebra n° 14 in São Paulo, he spent a good amount of time in training.
Finding it difficult to expand his boxing, he realized that he was more inclined to mediate fightng than to weave gloves.
On one occasion, the opportunity appeared and he registered to take an arbitration course at the Paulista Federation of Pugilismo, whose great teacher was teacher Fausto Martins Garcia.
In 1972 he also studied at the Brazilian Confederation of Pugilism for referees and judges at national and international level.
Graduated and trained, he participated in tournaments promoted by the Paulista Federation of Pugilismo, Brazilian titles, North & Northeast tournaments titles and international fighting titles in Argentina.
their efficiency was proven. his will was growing, and when he learned that a renowned professor from Hungary would come to Brazil, he did not hesitate of his technique, since this course was useful for accreditation in AIBA (International Amateur Boxing Association).
With a lot of willpower and a lot of studying, of the 32 students only two went on to pley in valid world title fights (Antônio Bernardo Soares & Modesto Téofilo) and other matches at the events promoted for the South American Amateur Boxing Association.
He started the international trek and therefore played in the South American title fights in Argentina, Peru, Chile, Venezuela, Mexico, and Italy; world championships on the Rhine and East Berlin.
Acted in the Olympics in the fights between amateurs. He participated in more than 8.200 fights as an arbitrator or judge, in the interior or in the capitals of the Brazilian States from the beginning of 1.972 to 2.010.
Acting in the Pan American games in the amateur category in Cuba, there were more than 52 referees and judges, and to his glory he was awarded the best referee, and as a reward he was the only referee in South America to participate in the Baecelona Olympics.
In 1986 he enrolled in the course promoted by the WBC (World Boxing Council) in New York (USA) for accreditation in professional Boxing fights. With more this activity, was invited to act in several events like neutral judge in Italy, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, and Brazil.
He never forgot the teachings and advice of teacher Newton Campos: Organization punctuality and professionalism. The result is fantastic for his devotion to the fine art (boxing), since as a referee or judge in the professional category he has performed in more then 7.650 fight until November 2.017, his last acting as central referee in the farewell fight of the Brazilian boxer Acelino Freitas, having several records in his professional curriculum in including Paulista, Brazilian, South American, Continental, Pentacontinental, American Latin, American Fedelatin, and World titles.
