"WBA junior welterweight champion Antonio 'Kid Pambele' Cervantes of Columbia knocked out Puerto Rican challenger Victor Ortiz with a left hook to the chin at 1:35 of the 2nd round after flooring the challenger twice in the opening round of their scheduled 15-round bout before some 10,000 fans at the 20,000 seat bull ring. Ortiz, 139 1/2, trying to take the offensive in the 2nd round, attacked with short uppercuts and connected twice to the champion's head and body. But Cervantes, 140, put his opponent out for good with the crushing left hand in his 7th title defense." -Associated Press
- It was reported that Cervantes was next expected to defend his title in Japan against Shinichi Kadota on September 3rd. However, the fight did not take place until October 26th.
