Santana was a good boxer and solid slugger who lived in New York and trained under Jimmy De Forest early in his career. He is credited by Cuban sportswriters with having over 80 pro fights. In the the forties and fifties he was a top referee working the Sugar Ray Robinson-Danny Womber fights and Havana exhibitions by Joe Louis. He died in Miami, Florida in 2002.
