Archie Moore 172 lbs beat Curtis Sheppard 183 lbs by UD in round 12 of 12

"Archie Moore weathered two knockdowns by the mighty right of Curtis "Hatchetman" Sheppard and won a convincing 12 round decision last night at the Baltimore Century Club's arena. Sheppard won only the 2nd and 8th rounds when his famed haymaker connected to Archie's head, but during the other frames Moore outboxed and outsmarted the ponderous Hatchet who had an almost 11 pound weight advantage. Throughout the fray, Sheppard kept trying to land his one Sunday punch, and he connected in the 2nd and 8th, each time dropping Moore to the canvas, the 1st time for a count of seven, the 2nd time - a near KO - for a count of nine. It was Sheppard, however, who was in a bad way at the end of the 12th, when a merciful bell saved him from an almost certain KO after a severe pasting." -Associated Press

"The most thrilling heavyweight scrap this town has held in years." Moore was down for a 6-count in round two and for nine in the eighth but outboxed Sheppard most of the way. - Baltimore Sun
