Armando Muniz 149 lbs beat Hedgemon Lewis 148 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

Attendance: 3,100; Gate: $24,100

"After a tissue-thin opening four rounds, in which Lewis, 148, employed strategy similar to slugger Muniz, Mando gradually took charge and pulled away. It was ironic that as Lewis slowly eased back into his familar pattern of sticking and running, Mando drew farther in front on points."

"Armando Muniz, a busy East Los Angeles slugger, survived a cut over his left eye early in the fight and battled on for an upset 10-round decision over Hedgemon Lewis Tuesday night at the Forum. Lewis entered the ring a 10-8 favorite and opened the fight landing lefts to the body and head and using his superior reach to keep Muniz off with jabs. Muniz, 149, solved Lewis' boxing style by bulling his way inside and throwing left and right combinations to the head. Lewis, 148, Los Angeles, won the early rounds before Muniz got through. Muniz suffered the cut over his left eye in the 4th and was bruised under his right eye in the 5th, but the 8th-ranked welterweight hopeful never abandoned his straight-ahead attack. His best round came in the 7th when he scored repeatedly with right hand shots to the head and one shook Lewis, but there were no knockdowns in the fight. Muniz frequently opened rounds with a right hand that would catch the 2nd-ranked Lewis off balance. A tactic the loser never seemed to solve." -The Long Beach Press-Telegram
