Art Aragon 146 lbs beat Chuck Davey 146 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10

The officials that voted for Aragon were suspended, probably because of the loud protests made by those who had bet on Davey (according to Bill Miller in The Ring), but were later reinstated.

"Touching off an immediate uproar of disbelief and disapproval from most of a turnaway crowd of 10,400 fans. Los Angeles' self-styled Golden Boy, Art Aragon, was awarded a split decision at the end of 10 rousing rounds at the Olympic Auditorium Thursday night. In the 2nd round Aragon landed seven right hand punches to Davey's jaw and head. In the 5th he connected with three solid wallops to the head, and in the 7th he shifted to the mid-section. The dancing, retreating Davey took them all and kept a constant stream of rights stabbing away at Aragon's chin and damaged eye. There were no knockdowns." -Associated Press

  • Within minutes of the decision being announced, California State Athletic Commission Chairman Tony Entenza and Commissioners Everett Sanders and Norman Houston met in a conference. Shortly after that Everett Sanders announced that they had suspended referee Mushy Callahan and judge Joe Stone who had both voted for Aragon.
  • Sanders called a meeting on February 24th to resolve the matter.
  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 56-54 Davey
  • At the February 24th hearing, referee Mushy Callahan and judge Joe Stone were reinstated due to their 'past record of honesty, integrity and ability.' However, despite the reinstatement, the Commission still deemed the decision awarding Aragon the decision over Chuck Davey to being 'faulty.'
