Art Tatta enlisted on Armistice Day in 1942 and served overseas for two years with the 30th Infantry Division. During his service, he was awarded the Silver Star with a Cluster. Art was severely wounded three times; the third wound injured his left shoulder so badly that he could hardly raise his arm. With the aid of his manager Benny Martino and trainer Frankie Doyle, Tatta worked out a series of calisthenic exercises for his injured shoulder. Gradually he regained mobility and soon was able to use it freely and resume to box again.
