Arthur Pelkey 210 lbs beat Luther McCarty 200 lbs by KO in round 1 of 10

  • Date: 1913-05-24
  • Location: Tommy Burns's Arena, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
  • Referee: Edward W Smith

"White" Heavyweight Championship of the World

Luther McCarty was pronounced dead about eight minutes after the knockout, which came after about 2 minutes of fighting. The coroner's jury decided that no blow had been responsible for McCarty's collapse, but that death was due to a hemorrhage of the brain, probably caused by a previous injury. The next day Tommy Burns's Arena was destroyed by fire; arson was suspected.
