- This bout was originally scheduled to take place on Golden Boy Promotions' December 8th, 2005 card in San Diego, but was cancelled at the last minute, reportedly because Rubio had neglected to take a required medical test.
- Kodzoev did not answer the bell for round eight, due to an apparent rib injury. In the final seconds of round seven, Kodzoev had slipped, and the left side of his torso seemed to strike one of Rubio's knees on the way down. This may have been the cause of the injury, as Kodzoev had shown no signs of a rib injury up until then, nor did he seem to have been otherwise significantly hurt at any other point in the bout.
