Barney Ross 137 lbs beat Billy Petrolle 142 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Lightweight champion Barney Ross, today stood out as undisputed challenger for the welterweight crown. He smashed into the welter throne room last night when he battered game old Billy Petrolle into retirement. The champion not only outboxed Petrolle, but he outfought him. He had the better of almost every exchange, driving the veteran across the ring time and again. Petrolle's legs were gone. He lacked the footwork and spring with which he used to move in. Gone was the deadly double-shift from which he could uncoil and land left hooks to the body. His heart was there, and his punch was there, but his feet couldn't bring him into hitting range. Ross was virtually unmarked. He won eight of the ten rounds. The 6th was even, and Petrolle's desperate rally won him the 9th." -United Press

  • "Did you ever see a dream fighting? Well, I did - that is when Barney didn't have that left glove in front of my face. That boy is a marvel. He's got everything. He'll be lightweight champion until he's as old as I am, if he doesn't grow out of the division." -Billy Petrolle
