Notes

  • Taylor, with a record of 33-0-1, entered the fight ranked No. 1 at featherweight by the WBA.
  • This was Taylor's second attempt at winning the WBA Featherweight Championship. He fought a fifteen-round draw against then-champion Eusebio Pedroza in 1982.
  • When Taylor first got on the scale at the official weigh-in, he was twelve ounces over the 126-pound featherweight limit. He was given two hours to lose the weight or he would forfeit his chance of winning the title. After jumping rope for twenty minutes in heavy clothing, he got back on the scale and weighed 125½ pounds.
  • There was a crowd of 7,000.
  • The Associated Press reported: "Taylor began confidently and controlled the fight for the first three rounds with his hit-and-run tactics. ... But gradually, McGuigan turned the fight around. He became more aggressive and peppered his foe with fierce left hooks and uppercuts to the ribs and head. In the seventh and eighth rounds, McGuigan at last produced the fearsome body punching that has been the hallmark of his all-action style — and the challenger visibly weaken."
  • Taylor's corner stopped the fight after the eighth round. Shortly afterward, Taylor collapsed in the ring. His seconds said it was due to heat exhaustion.
