In January 1930, Judd (real name: George Pankey) pled guilty to a charge of manslaughter in the killing of Bill Dean, a itinerant black cotton picker in Corocran, California. Originally accused of murder, Pankey had shown that he had killed Dean with an iron pipe, to protect himself from an attack from Dean, an admitted sexual pervert. Pankey was to be sentenced to one to ten years at San Quentin penitentiary.
