"19 year old Ben Villaflor, 128, the power punching Filipino southpaw fought his way to a unanimous 15-round decision over Alfredo Marcano, 128 3/4. of Caracas, Venezuela before a crowd of 8,000 fans in the Honolulu International Center Arena. Marcano fought a strange fight as he backtracked, allowing Ben to set the pace and carry the fight, and although noted as a late starter, he never was able to take the play away from his determined opponent. Although mainly a puncher, Ben fought a smart, cool fight, never going out for the KO, and picking his shots smartly. In the 10th, Marcano opened a cut over Ben's left eye with a right cross and at this point it appeared he might rally and pull out the fight. That all changed in the 11th when Ben rocked Marcano with a hard left to the jaw. Marcano made a last ditch effort in the 15th but it was much too late." -Boxing Illustrated, July 1972 issue
