Bennie Briscoe 159 lbs beat Jimmy Lester 159 lbs by TKO at 1:53 in round 6 of 10

  • Date: 1967-11-20
  • Location: Convention Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
  • Referee: Joe Sweeney

"Bill Sanford, manager of middleweight boxer Jimmy Lester, charged fraud today in his fighter's loss by a TKO to 3rd ranked middleweight Bennie Briscoe of Philadelphia. Referee Joe Sweeney stopped the fight at 1:53 of the 6th round Monday night after Briscoe hammered out a vicious body attack and then went to the head of his San Francisco opponent. Briscoe opened fast with rights and lefts to the body during the fight. He changed his style in the 3rd round, going to the head and damaging Lester's left eye. Lester threw only occasional jabs to the head and concentrated on trying to make Briscoe miss. Late in the 5th round, however, Lester came to life and threw a series of rights and lefts to Briscoe's head, but with no evident damage." -United Press International

  • Bill Sanford threatened to go to the District Attorney's office and demand criminal prosecution of the referee and a complete investigation of the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission 'for letting a fraud take place'.

Post fight comment

  • "It was just a plain simple fraud. (Sweeney) stopped the fight for no reason at all, especially since Lester had his opponent out only one round earlier. Jimmy wasn't hurt. We'll let a jury decide it." -Bill Sanford
