Bennie Briscoe 155 lbs beat Joe Shaw 151 lbs by RTD in round 6 of 10

  • Date: 1970-03-16
  • Location: Arena, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
  • "Bennie Briscoe, 155, of Philadelphia, scored an upset TKO over Joe Shaw Monday night when the New Yorker failed to answer the bell for the 7th round. Shaw, 151, complained after the fight that Briscoe had thumbed him in the left eye during the first three minutes. Shaw, however, had taken command, peppering Briscoe with right and left jabs. Briscoe, the puncher, could only counter and he was behind on all cards when the fight was awarded to him. Shaw's eye had begun to puff in the 4th round and by the 6th it was swollen shut. The bout was stopped when the commission doctor, after checking the closed eye, gave the order to referee Zach Clayton." -United Press International

    • This bout - the main event - was delayed for app. 30 minutes due to a bottle and chair throwing melee that followed an unpopular decision win for Augie Pantellas over Ruben DeJesus in the semi-main, which resulted in several injuries to fans who were cut from the flying glass.
