"Bennie Briscoe appeared to have an easy win in front of him in search of his 12th straight KO. But, in what has to be the upset of the year, Luis Vinales, 160, of the Bronx, via Puerto Rico, defeated Briscoe, 160, of Philadelphia by a 10-round split decision at the CYC Arena. Briscoe utilized his familiar bore-in offense as he backed Vinales into the ropes and began unloading some solid shots. He was so intent on knocking Vinales out that he didn't take time to pace himself or set up a basic offensive plan. By the 6th, instead of retreating as he had for the previous five rounds, Vinales charged with left-rights careening off Bennie's head. Briscoe was all offense but no defense and caught many of the Puerto Rican's jabs with his chin. Bennie continued to charge but the elusive Vinales remained upright. In the last few seconds of the fight Vinales stood toe to toe with Briscoe to the crowd's delight and Briscoe's astonishment." -Boxing Illustrated, July 1972 issue
