Benny Kid Paret 147 lbs beat Don Jordan 144 lbs by UD in round 15 of 15

World Welterweight Title

"Benny (Kid) Paret of Cuba, whose wilting body attack won the world welterweight championship from Don Jordan Friday night, probably will defend his new 147 pound crown in New York on Oct. 15. Jordan was unimpressive in Friday night's nationally televised 15 rounder at the Las Vegas Convention Center as he lost a unanimous decision before a disappointing crowd estimated at 3,500. Don, who weakened under Paret's persistent body barrages, suffered his third straight defeat. During the comparatively dull fight, Jordan suffered a five stitch cut on his left eyebrow. He was bleeding from the nose at the finish, and his left cheekbone was swollen." -United Press International

  • Both the UPI and AP reports stated that the actual scorecards of this fight were 71-65 by referee Charley Randolph, 70-68 by judge Ray Lessard and 71-67 by judge Ralph Mosa.
  • Unofficial UPI scorecard - 72-65 for Paret.
  • Jordan's purse was $85,000 for this bout. However, he agreed to pay co-managers Jackie McCoy and Don Nesseth $75,000 of the purse to buy out his contract. Moreover, while he was at an area hospital getting his left eye stitched, Jordan discovered his ex-wife had attached the remaining share of the purse.
  • Jordan had a 90 day agreement with the Paret camp for a rematch if he lost. However, the NBA decreed Paret would have to fight Federico Thompson in his first defense over any private agreements.

Post fight comment

  • "Paret's first defense will be against Federico Thompson and the winner of that meets Luis Rodriguez. That has been the NBA's plan for some time and that is the way it is going to be." -NBA President Anthony Maceroni
