SANSTOL HAS CLOSE CALL QUEBEC TILT
There was little doubt last night that Sanstol had the edge in almost every round but owing to the aggressiveness of the little Gothamite, Pete had to go at top speed all the way to keep out in front. Sanstol's superior boxing skill enabled him to block many of Brostoff's body blows and he was able to duck out of harm's way from wicked rights and lefts to the head. The champ [Sanstol had won the World Bantamweight Title the week before in Montreal] used an effective straight left which he kept poking into Benny's face and had the New Yorker bleeding from the nose and mouth in the seventh round. Brostoff had opened an old cut under Pete's right eye early in the fight.
Sanstol entered the ring at 118 while Brostoff scaled 122. The first round was fairly even with both boys missing wildly. Sanstol heaved himself to the floor in this round, when in close he swung and missed and Benny somersaulted over him. The second was Brostoff's by a good margin when he scored often with rights and lefts to Sanstol's head. Pete again went to the canvas in the second, half pushed and half slipping. The champion came back strong in the third and had a clear advantage, sending home some stiff body punches and using a fine right uppercut. The fourth also went to the Blond but the margin was slight.
The fifth was even with very little damage being done. Brostoff carried the sixth when he forced matters and landed tellingly to Pete's mid-section. The seventh was a good round with Brostoff having a shade in the first minute landing to the champ's head with both hands. Pete came back, however, and evened honors by sending over some hard rights and lefts to Benny's jaw. The eighth was the Norwegian's by a big edge. Pete scored seven or eight straight lefts to Brostoff's nose and mouth without getting a return and had the New Yorker on the defensive.
Benny made a fine rally in the ninth and had the crowd on their feet when he flailed away with both hands. Sanstol recovered himself again however and both boys stood toe-to-toe. Brostoff was bleeding from mouth and nose while blood flowed from Pete's right cheek. The tenth was a repetition of the ninth but Sanstol appeared the stronger and scored the neater punches.
