Caplan came from the same East London area as Jackie (Kid) Berg. Caplan was also of Hebrew heritage. In February of 1939 Ring magazine ranked Caplan as the number 9 featherweight in the world. As an amateur Caplan was the 1931 ABA Featherweight champion. Caplan was also the younger brother of fellow fighter Phil Richards. Became a well regarded referee after he retired from boxing. Caplan was a veteran of World War II and was a Sargent in the British Army.
