Bernie Reynolds was drafted in March 1943, and wound up at Camp Stewart, Georgia, where Joe Vella was staging bouts for the Army at the base. Reynolds began boxing in the novice class as a middleweight and soon ran up a large string of victories which won him a place on the boxing squard. In 25 soldier fights, he was beaten only twice. Top ranking Artie Levine and Jackie Cranford, who were far more seasoned defeated him in intercamp bouts. As a member of General George Patton's Third Army, he earned three battle stars and also won five bouts overseas. He was honorably discharged in March 1946 and was immediately signed by his old Army pal Joe Vella.
