William ("Bill") Gene Godfrey was born May 10, 1931, in Abbeville SC, a son of the late John and Willie Mae King Godfrey. Bill boxed both in the Army, and afterwards for a period of his life as a prizefighter, middleweight class. He debut was in 1948, and his last professional match was in 1961. He won several trophies, once boxing in the prestigious Madison Square Gardens in NYC. According to his friend Guido Capri, Bill was a well-known and respected boxer in his weight class. Bill married Malene Bell Godfrey, and they had seven children. He retired from textile work at Dunean Plant, Greenville, SC. He died in Greenville, March 15, 2001
