  • Date: 1969-04-25
  • Location: War Memorial Auditorium, Syracuse, New York, USA
  • Referee: Tony Phillips

"Billy Backus, the tough young southpaw, scored a unanimous 12-round victory over Percy Pugh of New Orleans in a hard action-packed bout last night in the Syracuse War Memorial Auditorium. The Canastota favorite was never in trouble although he took plenty of jabs and slapping punches to the head from the swift-moving Pugh. Backus concentrated on the mid-section and had Pugh staggering on several occasions after well landed shots to the body. However, the clever boxer from New Orleans managed to fight his way out of trouble. The lone knockdown came in the 1st round when Backus caught Pugh off-balance and landed a blow to the side of the head. Referee Tony Phillips ruled it a slip and not a knockdown." -Auburn Citizen-Advertiser
