Billy Backus 149 lbs beat Robert Gallois 148 lbs by MD in round 10 of 10

  • Date: 1971-03-15
  • Location: Palais des Sports, Paris, Paris, France
  • Judge: 46-42

"It took a disputed knockdown to get Billy Backus started and signal the end of Frenchman Robert Gallois. Backus, the world welterweight champion from Syracuse, NY, opened sluggishly against Gallois. But in the 5th round, a wayward right by Gallois dropped Backus to his knees. Backus became enraged, claiming he had slipped. He then took his rage out on Gallois, decking him three times in the last five rounds enroute to the decision in a non-title bout. Backus dropped the Frenchman in the 7th and again in the 8th as the partisan French crowd whistled. Backus put Gallois down again in the last round to assure himself of the decision." -United Press International
