International News Service, December 29, 1936:
- “Billy Conn, Pittsburgh’s 19-year-old up-and-coming middleweight, jumped into the forefront of the tri-state boxing circles today with a close decision victory over Fritzie Zivic, welterweight title contender, over the ten-round route.
- A near capacity crowd at Duquesne Garden saw Conn earn a surprising win over his more experienced rival, who handed away seven pounds in what was billed as a “grudge” fight. Entering the ring at 149 ½, Zivic took the fight away from Conn for the first five rounds, when it appeared he would earn the decision by a wide margin. Conn, however, changed tactics midway through the bout and, by circling wide around the lighter Zivic, and shooting in with his accurate left, piled up enough points to earn the nod of the two judges. The referee voted for Zivic, but the decision won favor with the crowd. Conn weighed 156 3/4.”
- Unofficial UP scorecard - 6-4 Zivic
