Cornwell died of injuries sustained in a bout March 29, 1949 with Tote Martinez. Cornwell's head hit the floor when he was knocked out, and reportedly bounced four inches after it hit. The padding on the canvas was supposed to be two inches thick, but after investigating, it was determined that it was no more than one inch thick.
