Billy Edwards fought regularly in the Baltimore-Washington area and the Southern U.S. as El Kadir. Being a light-colored black fighter, he passed himself off as Turkish to be able to obtain better matches. In the South, were interracial matchups were prohibited, this allowed him to fight white boxers. He is not to be confused with Abd El Kebir of Spanish Morocco who also fought in the U.S. in the 1920s.
