According to The Ring, Dec. 1953, p. 40, Corporal James Bennett of the 31st Military Police Company, stationed at Camp Atterbury, IN, had been an amateur boxer of some note in Atlanta, GA, who used the fighting name of "Billy Joe." He had 16 amateur bouts and won them all. He was six feet tall, weighed 175 pounds, and was a southpaw. He planned to become a professional boxer upon his discharge from the Army in July 1954.
