According to his death notice in the August 28, 1939 edition of the Chicago Tribune on Newspapers.com, William H. Stift died on August 26, 1939. He was survived by his widow, Josephine E. Stift, and his daughter, Florence Silberstorf.

According to a boxing news column with the headline, "Bolden Seeks Reinstatement Before Boxing Commission, in the September 5, 1939 edition of the Chicago Tribune on Newspapers.com, "Billy Stift, former Chicago middleweight, is dead at 72 years of age."
