Billy Tierney was the 1942 finalist for the Open Cleveland Golden Gloves lightweight championship.

His date of birth is sometimes given as Dec. 9, 1924, but surviving family says it's Dec. 1. He married the ex-wife of his manager, Mickey King.

Tierney was injured in a logging accident which ended his career, according to family oral history. He spent two years in the Veterans Administration hospital in Bellingham, Washington, learning to walk again. He always said he was going to make a boxing comeback, but he never did. He later worked for the Container Corporation of America in Portland, Oregon, for 20-plus years.

Tierney developed brain dementia, and was in a nursing home from age 55 until he died a couple months short of his 70th birthday October 1994 in Portland, Oregon.
