The Turkey Pointer Gets the Decision, but the New Yorker Did Well.

Before the Eureka Athletic Club last night "Turkey Point George Smith" (Billy Whistler) and Marty McCue, of New York, made a twenty-round glove contest which was superior to any seen this season. It demonstrated that Smith, who got the decision, is not only a quick fighter, but a stayer.

About six hundred persons were in the amphitheatre. The club had two preliminary bouts arranged. They were ordinary affairs. One resulted in a knock out.

The star bout was the feature. it was a hot contest. Charles (Bull) McCarty was behind Smith and Joe Gans behind McCue. McCue was the taller man and had the reach, but he did not show quite so much hitting power as did Smith.

The bout throughout the twenty rounds was pretty even as regards points. McCue made a mistake throughout in leading. He was not so strong as Smith, and at the end he was the weaker man.

When Jake Kilrain, the referee, decided in favor of Smith he made a neat decision, and though it was criticized, the fact that Smith was the stronger at the finish and was the aggressor in the last few rounds, it was deemed correct, though some thought the verdict should have been a draw.

Still there was nothing that the winner could gloat over, and there was no disgrace to the loser from the boxer's point of view. Both men put up a game contest. It was in ring parlance "a great fight," and both the contestants could have found backers among the spectators for another go to a finish, or for a limited round contest.

The contest was devoid of roughing and the men broke from clinches nicely, considering the hot work they were doing.
