At 18 years old, he was middleweight champion of the Royal Australian Navy. According to his manager Pat Kearon, Miller was unbeaten prior to his fight with Ern Sheppard and his record included: Joe Buweller (KO 4); Colin Claxton (KO 3); C. Moore (Won on points 10); Seaman Parkes (KO 4) twice; Seaman Tunney (KO 3); Tom Keogh (KO 2). He was still serving in the navy in 1923 on board HMAS Platypus.
Following his win over Ern Sheppard for the heavyweight title, Miller was forced to call off a fight with Max Gornik because he was unable to obtain leave from his ship, and he had damaged both hands against Sheppard.
