Rex Layne 210 lbs lost to Bob Baker 215 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Most of the crowd of 6,000 persons at West Jordan last night thought Rex Layne won his 10 round comeback fight with Bob Baker, 2nd ranked heavyweight in the nation. Marv Jensen, director of Layne's fistic career thought so too. As did everyone in the Layne camp. But the judges thought otherwise, so Rex's only consolation today is that he knows he fought an excellent fight. And he looked exceedingly strong in the last round, as he got his second win. The decision favouring Baker last night was very unpopular with the fans, who reflected their distaste with lusty booing." -Logan Herald-Journal

  • Referee Max Baer actually scored it 5-5 in rounds, but utilizing the supplemental points for an even bout, he scored for Baker.
  • The Logan Herald-Journal reported two unofficial scorecards from their sportswriters. Jim Cole had it 4-3-3 for Baker and Ray Nelson scored it 4-4-2 even with a supplemental point cast to Layne.
  • Bob Baker's purse - $15,000 guaranteed. However, due to the fact that the gate was only $17,652.50, Baker's manager, Dusty Bettor, agreed to take only $8,000 for the fight under the stipulation that the rest of the money would be taken off the top of the gate from their scheduled August rematch. This left the West Jordan Athletic Commission enough working capital to clear up other expenses and continue operations.
