"Bob Baker from Pittsburgh, rallied in the late rounds last night to gain a split decision over Utah's Rex Layne in a fight that probably didn't help the fistic careers of either. Layne, who lost twice previously to Baker, needed a win to project himself back into the heavyweight limelight. Layne didn't get the victory, but he warmed the hearts of some 5,000 fans as he made a valiant try to upset the Pittsburgh battler. Layne moved out fast in the early rounds and built up points on the surprised Baker. But Baker swarmed all over the Utahn after being staggered in the 5th round and gained the nod." -Associated Press
