R.R.M.Carpenter Jr. co-organized the Wilmington Sportsmen's Club with his friend boxing promotor Ralph Tribuani. Carpenter secured Wilmington Park as a fight venue. Being an advocate of fitness, at times, he participated in conditioning for Al Tribuani in the early 1940s. Carpenter attended Duke University in the late 1930s, where he was a stand-out football player. He was the president and owner of the Philadelphia Phillies major league baseball team.
