Jones was a standout football player at Whittier College in 1897. Turned amateur boxer in December of that year, boxing in a four rounder of two minute rounds against an unnamed opponent at Los Angeles' Manhattan Club Dec 17. The result was a draw. He boxed for a $15 prize in January of the next year.

In June of 1898 Jones was arrested and falsely accused of assault. He was later released when the charges were dropped by the complainant.

In between fights Jones paid the bills and kept in fighting trim by training local boxers like Jim Trimble at the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Jones apparently also worked as a piano mover. Reform movements in Los Angeles and San Francisco in the late 1890s began limiting the number of licenses granted for boxing cards in those cities. The "Coloured" owned Manhattan Club, where Jones had often fought, eventually closed it's doors.
