In a minor upset, John Hopoate scored his tenth knockout in ten wins (out of twelve bouts) by winning the Australian heavyweight title from Bob Mirovic by a ninth round stoppage. Mirovic's corner threw in the towel with Mirovic taking a great deal of unanswered punishment. Mirovic, 42. who had fought in ten Australian heavyweight title bouts and had held the Australian title off and on since 1998, lost for the fourth time in his last five bouts and fell to 29-20-2 with 20 KOs.
Mirovic sustained a broken bone in his right forearm when knocked down in round nine.
