Bob Murphy 177 lbs beat Dan Bucceroni 172 lbs by TKO at 0:51 in round 5 of 10

  • Date: 1951-03-16
  • Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
  • Referee: Ruby Goldstein

"Southpaw 'Irish' Bob Murphy, 177, weathered the best punches thrown by 'Dynamite' Dan Bucceroni tonight and kept marching in with a close quarter attack until he scored a TKO over the Philadelphia youngster at 51 seconds of the 5th round in MSG. Although Bucceroni was floored for a no-count by a left hook in the 1st round, he smashed the rugged Irishman with enough explosive uppercuts and shovel-hooks to the head to bring down an elephant. But Murphy kept marching in and beating the lanky Italian at close quarters. Referee Ruby Goldstein stopped the bout in the 5th round when Bucceroni, nearly helpless, was being battered severely in Murphy's corner." -United Press

  • Bucceroni bled from a gashed right brow and a bleeding nose. Murphy suffered a cut on his left brow and under his chin.
  • According to the UP article, Goldstein nearly stopped the bout in the 4th round but the bell rang before he could intervene.
  • Jack Cuddy of the UP wrote that efforts to match Harry 'Kid' Matthews with Joey Maxim for the title were bogging down and that Murphy's win might move him to the forefront of a title challenge. This came to pass as Maxim and Murphy met the following August for the title.
