Charley Joseph 159 lbs lost to Bobby Boyd 162 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10

"Bobby Boyd conceded today Charley Joseph is 'as good as any middleweight around' and ranks the New Orlean stylist on a par with Gene Fullmer and Rory Calhoun. Boyd, the Chicago bomber, seeking to regain a place among the division's leading challengers, parlayed a powerful right and advantages in reach and height last night to trim Joseph, a part-time barber. The 10 round bout had the crowd of nearly 5,000 screaming from the opening bell, with Boyd taking charge from the start. His right hand wallops had Joseph in trouble in the early sessions and a wide cut opened over his left eye in the 4th hampered Joseph's vision in the late stages. Joseph rallied after taking the early beating and gave Boyd all he could handle in the 7th and 8th rounds. Joseph's best punch was a stabbing left jab that had Boyd moving back and blinking. There were no knockdowns." -Associated Press

  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 6-4 Boyd
  • Judge Ernie Cojoe actually had it 5-5 in rounds but had Joseph the winner on aggressiveness and cleaner punching.
  • Going into this bout, Joseph was ranked 7th by Ring Magazine and 10th by the NBA.
