"Bobby Boyd, 160, Chicago, two years ago the No. 1 middleweight contender, currently unranked, unloaded a variety of punches and pounded away steadily for three minutes of every round to defeat Neal Rivers, 160 3/4 of Las Vegas, Wednesday night. It was an impressive victory for Boyd, who is trying to come back after being clubbed out of contention in '56 by Joey Giardello. Rivers, ranked No. 8 by the NBA, had only one good round in the nationally televised bout in Chicago Stadium. He was so ineffective against the charged-up Boyd that the decision was about as lopsided as it could get." -Associated Press
- The scores in the header are incorrect as Illinois was employing a 5-point must scoring system at this time

Post-fight comment
- "I just told him that he had better win or he would have to start way at the bottom of the ladder and we'd be fighting in Hoboken or somewhere." -Bernie Glickman, Boyd's manager, to the Press, on how he motivated Boyd
