"Bobby Boyd, who was bombed from his No. 2 middleweight ranking by Joey Giardello eight months ago, has a long way to go in his attempt to gain top contention. The 23 year old Chicagoan was not too impressive last night in winning his 3rd straight since the Giardello incident with a split 10 round decision over shifty Willie Vaughn. Vaughn connected with several good overhand rights to the jaw, but the Los Angeles fighter didn't have the power to bother his gangly foe. As it was, the fighters spent tying each other up and in only two late rounds did Boyd show signs of his old self, standing away and leveling with his long rights and lefts." -Associated Press
- Vaughn was a 10 day substitute for Rocky Castellani who sustained an eye injury.
