Danny Lopez 123 lbs lost to Bobby Chacon 126 lbs by TKO at 0:48 in round 9 of 12

"Bobby Chacon, unintimidated by Danny lopez' power, beat Little Red at his own game with a 9th round knockout at the L.A. Sport Arena Friday night. A nearly full house of 16,027 and 2,671 closed circuit TV witnesses at the Olympic Auditorium a few blocks away saw Chacon win a classic battle between the Southland's two popular featherweights when referee John Thomas called a halt at 48 seconds of the 9th. Chacon had the situation in hand most of the way and he brought it to a sudden halt when he bolted from his corner to start the climactic round. He met Lopez in the center of the ring with a heavy right that sent Lopez reeling toward the ropes, following up with two more rights and a left. Lopez would have gone down had he not fallen onto the bottom strand, where he absorbed further punishment until slumping to the deck. He gamely tried to resume battle but ran into another barrage and the final dynamite right that sent him onto the ropes on the opposite side of the ring." -Long Beach Press-Telegram

  • "You'll be back, Danny, I know you will. I'll have to admit I was pretty discouraged the night I lost to Olivares, but I recovered and turned into a better fighter." -Bobby Chacon to Danny Lopez
  • "126 my ass! He may have weighed that at noon, but by fight time, I'll bet he was close to 131!" -Teddy Bentham, Lopez' cornerman, complaining after the bout of Chacon's weight.
