"Bobby Valdez punched his way to the California featherweight title Thursday night as he floored Alex Benitez twice enroute to a 5th round knockout in their scheduled 12 rounder at the Olympic Auditorium. Valdez, 126, San Diego, caught his fading foe with a sharp left hook to the jaw and Benitez, 126, San Jose, was counted out at 1:14 of the 5th. The game Benitez had been sent to the canvas in the 1st round as Valdez connected on a right to the chin. But Benitez couldn't stay away from the hard-punching Valdez, who scored repeatedly with right-left combinations to the head and body." -United Press International
